Splenectomy for hypersplenism with or without preoperative splenic artery embolisation

Due to the fact that intraoperative blood loss is a common occurrence in splenectomy, the authors set out to compare the perioperative and clinical outcomes of splenic artery embolisation (SAE) prior to splenectomy versus splenectomy alone. On a total of 100 patients, the authors concluded that perioperative SAE in splenectomy patients significantly reduced the need for blood transfusion when compared to patients who underwent splenectomy alone.
